Chapter Eight

When I looked up, Jenny came into the room with her face locked in the ‘no emotion’ expression every hospital worker mastered early, including med techs. It meant some situation had spiraled out of control. Even worse, when she stopped in front of me, I knew the problem would be mine as soon as she could dump it on me.

“Jenny?”

“Sorry, Sam. Mrs. Hartman came in an ambulance earlier and her prognosis isn’t good, from what I’ve been told.”

My mood shifted from elation over my weekend with Jorge to the depression surrounding the loss of a…friend. Yes, Mrs. Hartman had become a friend. She’d lost the love of her life years ago and was now alone. Her story had made me realize it was time to find someone, and Jorge had helped me recognize he was worth being with. She might have been one of the most cantankerous people I’d ever dealt with, but I always knew where I stood with her. Sometimes blunt works, too, but at this instant in time, I focused on the good side of things. Once I’d caught up on my patients, I needed to see her and do whatever I could to make her more comfortable.

I finished the last person assigned to me and checked the time. I’d planned to visit Mrs. Hartman during my break, but at that instant, the intercom system erupted, calling for all medical staff. I grabbed Jenny as she ran past.

“What’s up?”

“Multiple car accident. Dense fogs blew in from the lake. We’re going to be busy.”

The next hours blurred as one crisis led to another. I had almost reached the end of my shift before I had time to look in on Mrs. Hartman. I turned to Jenny. “I’m going to run upstairs for a few minutes if you are okay with that.”

She glanced up and smiled. “Tell the battle-ax I said hi, if she doesn’t take off your head first.”

“She isn’t that bad, just kind of opinionated.”

She snorted and waved me off. “I got this. If something happens, I’ll page you. Make sure she leaves enough of your ass to keep the new boyfriend happy.”

A few minutes later I eased into the darkened room they’d told me held Mrs. Hartman. As I made my way into the space, the mass of monitoring equipment hospitals were famous for confronted me.

“They’ve already taken all the blood for tests that they need, young man.”

I jumped at an unexpected voice and turned to find an elderly but vibrant-looking, woman sitting beside the bed.

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t expecting anyone in her room. The way they talked…”

She made chucking noises as she studied me, down to my limp. “You must be the med tech Pearl talks about. Samuel, right?”

I stood in shock as she continued to talk. “I’m Rose, Pearl’s wife. She’s told us all about you. She doesn’t like needles, so I hope she hasn’t been too cranky.”

I froze, unsure what to say to this sweet woman, but the first thing that came to my mind spilled out.
